What Romance in Manhattan Is About
Karel Novak, a Czech immigrant, is extremely naive, and Sylvia, a chorus girl who knows the city, takes him under her wing. With the help of Murphy, the kind hearted policeman on the beat, she hides him from the immigration authorities and in time falls in love with him. Karel’s lack of papers is not the only trouble; a crooked lawyer and a group of well meaning welfare workers trying to place Sylvia’s little brother Frank in a foster home complicate the story. The film gives immigration not as a crime but as a situation calling for people to look out for one another. Ginger Rogers and Francis Lederer appear in Stephen Roberts’s seventy eight minute American film, completed in 1935.
