Steptoe & Son

Albert and his son Harold go round the neighbourhoods with a horse and cart collecting scrap, and they also live together in the yard. Harold wants out of that life and into the middle of London. One night he meets a dancer, marries her and brings her home. Albert takes it as a threat and starts playing every trick he knows to get the new bride out of the house. The film came out of the television series of the same name, running in Britain since 1962, and some things will be missing for anyone who does not know it. The real subject of the Steptoe pair is not scrap but the son's inability to break from his father: every attempt to leave is blocked by an illness, a guilt or a lie. That is why the comedy is more painful than funny. Wilfrid Brambell and Harry H. Corbett brought the parts over from television.
