A school class gathers for its twenty-fifth anniversary, and the graduates, now settled middle-aged men, remember their school years as a happy time. The film shows that memory to be a lie: the school was a place that ground its pupils down systematically, and one teacher in particular, Blomme, kept them under torment for years. What came out of those years is that one of the class became a murderer. Peter Schrøder adapted Hans Scherfig’s 1940 novel, an openly socialist book aimed at the old school order, its beatings and its indifference to the lives of the young. It was the most watched Danish film of its year at home. Frits Helmuth took best actor at both the Robert and the Bodil awards for the part.
