What Strawman Is About

In Taiwan in the 1940s, in the last days of Japanese rule, a poor village is busier with feeding itself than with colonial politics. One day a bomb dropped from an American aircraft lands in a field and stays there without going off. Two tenant farmer brothers, A Fa and Big Mouth, get it into their heads to take the bomb to the Japanese commander and collect a reward, and set about carrying it into town; on the way they fall from one disaster into another. Wang Tung’s ninety six minute Taiwanese film tells the absurdity of life under occupation as black comedy and is the first film of his Taiwan trilogy. It opened on 23 October 1987 and won best film, best director and best original screenplay at the Golden Horse awards.
