Summer School, 2001

Dužan Duong's 2025 Czech film covers a summer in which a teenage boy returns to his family after years apart. He had been sent to Vietnam as a child while his younger brother stayed in Czechia. The return is not easy. The father keeps his distance, the mother tries to make up for the past and the brother does not want to share the attention; the narrative gives all three views in turn and blames no one. The cast come from the Vietnamese community in Czechia. The film moves between two languages. The tone is calm and the close open. Who it's for: viewers of migrant family narratives and central European cinema. Who it's not for: viewers expecting incident; the film is built on everyday life.
