Sunny

Na-mi, in middle age, runs into Chun-hwa, an old schoolfriend being treated for cancer, and the woman asks her for one thing: bring the seven-member group they formed at school, Sunny, back together before she dies. Na-mi starts looking for each of them. The film moves between their school years at the end of the eighties and the present, showing the Korea of that time, the demonstrations in the streets and the tear gas, not as background but from inside the girls' lives. Kang Hyoung-chul holds comedy and grief in the same scene. Its best passages are the fights and the pop music of the period. It was a large box office success in Korea and has been remade in several countries. Who it is for: viewers who like Korean nostalgia films and stories of friendship between women. Who it is not for: anyone avoiding an emotional finale.
