Superheroes

Anna draws comics, guards her independence and lives in disorder. Marco teaches physics, is shy and keeps everything in order. They meet in the rain, and the film covers the twenty years that follow. Not in sequence, though: the night they met can be followed directly by a fight years later. That structure is Paolo Genovese's whole move. Setting the best and worst versions of the same two people side by side makes the change visible rather than described. The title comes from there too, the idea that couples who withstand the erosion of time are performing a kind of heroism. Alessandro Borghi and Jasmine Trinca lead, and it opened on 23 December 2021. Its flaw is that the idea outlasts its execution. The device starts repeating, the jumps keep cutting the emotion off, and the characters' work, the comics and the physics, remains decoration. Who it is for: viewers who like romantic drama with a played structure. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a straight love story.
