Susi Susanti: Love All

Sim F.'s 2019 Indonesian film follows the badminton player Susi Susanti. She enters a training camp young and rises to the national team. The film sets the question of citizenship beside the sport. Susanti came from a family of Chinese descent, and during the events of the nineties her family's papers became a problem; the narrative shows directly that an athlete who won medals for the country was counted a foreigner in it. Laura Basuki leads. Match sequences take wide space. The tone is emotional. Who it's for: viewers of sports biography and Indonesian history. Who it's not for: viewers expecting the discrimination examined in depth; the film keeps it in the background.
