A documentary about how American agriculture works that keeps one farmer at its centre: Marty Travis, who works land in Illinois his family has farmed for seven generations. After watching both his soil and the community around him come apart under the pressure of agribusiness, he turns Spence Farm into a highly diversified operation and starts selling directly to kitchens in Chicago. The film is the work of Matt Wechsler and Annie Speicher. Chefs including Rick Bayless and Dan Barber speak, along with the writer Mark Bittman and a number of agricultural specialists. It argues openly for organic and local production and gives the other side no room, so the story it tells and the policy it advocates are best read separately.
