What Swan Lake Is About
Kimio Yabuki's 1981 Japanese animation is adapted from Tchaikovsky's ballet. Prince Siegfried sees a swan wearing a crown on a forest lake, and the swan turns out to be Princess Odette, put under a spell by the sorcerer Rothbart. Only true love can break it. Rothbart and his daughter Odile do everything they can to prevent that. One of Toei's ballet adaptations; Tchaikovsky's music runs through the whole film and the dance passages are rebuilt as drawing. A version prepared for children, told plainly and directly.
