What Tangos Are for Two Is About
Jaime Chávarri’s 1998 film is set in Buenos Aires in 1933. Juana Romero, a seamstress who lives for the music of Carlos Gardel, leaves her boyfriend for Renzo Franchi, a tango singer who happens to sound and look like him, and insists that his trio perform Gardel’s songs. When Gardel himself is unavailable, Renzo records a Ford commercial in his place and the resemblance quietly becomes a profession. A tour north ends badly, the couple separate, and Renzo tries to reach New York, after which the legend takes over the story. The film keeps asking what becomes of a man who imitates a voice once that voice is gone. Darío Grandinetti and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón play them.
