The documentary is about a change that came over tattooing. Three names stand at the centre of the account. Charlie Cartwright, Jack Rudy and Freddy Negrete changed the craft. The three of them developed a technique working in black and grey. They use fine lines and shading. What that produces on the skin comes close to realism. The style was born between prison walls. Then it moved into the shops of East Los Angeles. From there it spread into tattooing at large. The film follows that journey step by step. People who wear tattoos and people who make them speak. Danny Trejo and Travis Barker are among them. Ed Hardy is part of the account as well. The documentary also takes up where tattooing sits in society.
