Teheran '43

In Paris in 1980, what the Soviet agent Andrei Borodin remembers takes the story back to 1943 and the Tehran Conference, where Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill met. A senior Nazi officer plans to kill all three at once and hands the job to a German agent, Max Richard. The attempt comes to nothing. In those same days Andrei has a short but serious affair with Marie, a Frenchwoman living in Tehran. Almost forty years later the account is reopened. Aleksandr Alov and Vladimir Naumov directed it together, in a Soviet, French and Swiss co-production with western names like Alain Delon and Curd Jürgens in the cast. The music is by Charles Aznavour, Georges Garvarentz and Mieczysław Weinberg. It was the most watched film in the Soviet Union in 1981, drawing forty-seven and a half million admissions, and it took the Golden Prize at the Moscow Film Festival. Whether the assassination plot it is built on actually existed is still disputed among historians.
