What The Flight Is About
A group of people fleeing the Russian Civil War: some of them ordinary people caught up in events, some of them guilty. The flight runs from Russia to Istanbul and on to Paris, and then some of them go back. One to be happy, another to answer for what he did; others never go back and know they will carry the loss of home for the rest of their lives. The film draws on Mikhail Bulgakov's play Flight, and also on his novel The White Guard and his libretto Black Sea. Aleksandr Alov and Vladimir Naumov directed it together. It screened at Cannes in 1971. The Istanbul section is of particular interest seen from Turkey.
