What Thanatos, Drunk Is About
In a crumbling house on the edge of Taipei, two brothers drift through odd jobs, messy love and a quiet wish for a life that belongs to them. The younger one works a vegetable stall at the market and is with a girl who cannot speak; their mother’s drinking keeps getting worse, and the return of the elder brother from the United States pulls what was left of the household out of balance. Chang Tso-chi’s hundred and seven minute Taiwanese film watches people living at the margin of the city without passing judgement, and treats poverty not as background but as the substance of the day. It screened in the Panorama section at the Berlin Film Festival in 2015, and Lee Hong-chi was named best new performer at the Golden Horse Awards that year.
