What Thank You Very Much Is About
Alex Braverman's 2025 documentary is about the comedian Andy Kaufman. In his performances Kaufman chose to anger audiences and to make the real and the staged impossible to separate. The argument is that this was not a joke. Kaufman turned everything into performance, his own death included; the narrative shows the mistrust that left in audiences and the load it placed on those around him. Previously unreleased footage is used. Danny DeVito and Steve Martin speak. The documentary leaves some questions unanswered. Who it's for: viewers of stand-up history and performance art. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an orderly life story; the documentary is as slippery as its subject.
