Thanmathra

Blessy's 2005 Malayalam film follows the collapse of a man with a happy family life after a diagnosis of early Alzheimer's. Ramesan Nair lives an ordinary clerk's life with his wife and two children; symptoms that begin with forgetfulness quickly dissolve his identity and his bond with his family. The film is less about the medical course of the illness than about a son having to take his father's place. Mohanlal's performance is among the most cited of his career and brought him a special jury prize at the National Film Awards. Blessy advances the illness without turning it into melodrama; the deterioration is slow and shown in detail. The emotional pressure is still high, and the final section does not hide its intention to make the audience cry. Who it's for: viewers interested in Malayalam drama, Mohanlal's acting and stories about illness. Who it's not for: anyone for whom dementia and caregiving will land too personally, or who will find the emotional manipulation excessive.
