What That's Entertainment! III Is About
MGM turned seventy in 1994 and opened its vaults once more. In this third compilation the studio's veteran stars appear on camera to introduce the clips: June Allyson, Cyd Charisse, Lena Horne, Howard Keel, Esther Williams, Gene Kelly. What sets it apart is the weight given to material nobody ever saw. There are numbers cut before release, first takes, voices as they were before dubbing. One of them is Ava Gardner singing in her own voice in Show Boat, a track later replaced by somebody else's. Bud Friedgen and Michael J. Sheridan direct; a hundred and thirteen minutes. Both are editors, and they took on the film together from producing through to the cut. In places they split the screen to run the version shot and the version released side by side.
