What The 317th Platoon Is About
Indochina, 1954. Eight days before the French defeat, a platoon of four French soldiers and forty-one Laotian troops is ordered to abandon its post and cross a hundred and fifty kilometres of jungle. At its head are an idealistic lieutenant fresh from the academy and an experienced sergeant who spent the Second World War in the German army. The film looks for no heroism; there is rain, leeches, wounds and constant ambush. Pierre Schoendoerffer was an army cameraman in that war and was taken prisoner at Dien Bien Phu, and his cinematographer had served there too.
