What Drummer-Crab Is About

A French navy supply ship works its way toward the fishing fleets off Newfoundland, and its captain, who does not have long to live, is looking for an officer he knew years ago: Willsdorff, nicknamed the Drummer-Crab. The story assembles itself out of what three men aboard remember, reaching back into the wars in Indochina and Algeria and arriving at a promise that was made and not kept. Pierre Schoendoerffer adapted his own novel, which had taken the Académie française's grand prize for fiction the year before, and Willsdorff is modelled on Pierre Guillaume, a naval officer convicted over the 1961 Algiers putsch. Jean Rochefort and Jacques Perrin lead, and the film took three Césars in 1978.
