What The 50 Year Argument Is About
Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi tell the story of the New York Review of Books through the arguments the paper itself started. The Review reached its fiftieth year in 2013 having kept literature and politics on the same page throughout, and the film braids rarely seen archival material, interviews with contributors and readings from writers including James Baldwin, Gore Vidal and Joan Didion together with footage shot in the Review’s West Village offices. Robert Silvers, the founding editor, sits at the centre of it. Ellen Kuras and Lisa Rinzler shot the film, HBO Documentary Films and BBC Arena produced it, and it went out on HBO in September 2014.
