What The 9th Guest Is About
Eight people are summoned to a penthouse by an unsigned telegram and find themselves locked in. A voice on the radio, their unknown host, explains that before the night is over each of them will die unless they can outwit the ninth guest, who is Death. Roy William Neill's 1934 film runs sixty five minutes and draws all its tension out of a single apartment. It comes from the 1930 novel The Invisible Host and the play made from it, which means this story was in circulation nine years before Christie's famous novel of 1939. Our record never mentions that lineage.
