What The American Dreamer Is About
In the winter of 1970 into 1971, Dennis Hopper is editing the forty eight hours of footage from The Last Movie, which he shot in Peru, at his house near Taos. The documentary watches the man in that house: at his desk, in his bath, with his visitors, talking while caught between his own film and his own legend. The camera does less to draw a portrait than to show how the account a person constructs about himself comes apart, and it matches the exhaustion of the counterculture at the end of the sixties. The American documentary by L.M. Kit Carson and Lawrence Schiller was shown only on university campuses at Hopper’s insistence, which is why it was long considered lost and was later found and restored. It was completed in 1971.
