What The Apollo Is About
Roger Ross Williams’s 2019 documentary tells the story of the Apollo in Harlem. The building opened in 1914 as a whites-only burlesque house where Black performers and Black audiences were equally unwelcome; when it reopened under the Apollo name in 1934 that arrangement was reversed, and within a few years the theatre was the largest employer of Black theatrical workers in the country. That November a seventeen-year-old Ella Fitzgerald walked onto its Amateur Night stage meaning to dance, changed her mind, sang, and won. Williams cuts archive footage together with the people who keep the building running today and with rehearsals for the theatre’s staging of Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me. It opened the Tribeca festival that year, at the Apollo itself.
