God Loves Uganda

Roger Ross Williams follows the young missionaries a Kansas City megachurch sends to Uganda and shows how the American evangelical movement became attached to the country’s anti-gay campaign. At the centre of the film is the bill raised in 2009 that proposed penalties for homosexuality reaching as far as death. On the other side stands Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, expelled from his church and publicly abused for being tolerant. The documentary does not hide what it thinks, but it gives most of its running time to letting the missionaries speak in their own words. It premiered at Sundance in 2013. Williams had won an Academy Award for a short documentary the year before, and the film carries that same interest in letting people say what they believe without a narrator standing over them.
