What The Assassination of Matteotti Is About
On 30 May 1924 the socialist deputy Giacomo Matteotti stood up in parliament and said the election had been won by fraud and violence. Eleven days later he was seized in the street and killed. The murder shook Italy, the opposition walked out of parliament, and for several months the regime looked as though it might fall; then, at the start of 1925, Mussolini took responsibility for it and declared the dictatorship. Florestano Vancini tells it from inside the investigation: buried evidence, magistrates leaned on, a party turning its own crisis into a demonstration of strength. Franco Nero plays Matteotti, Mario Adorf plays Mussolini, Umberto Orsini plays the fascist Dumini and Vittorio De Sica the magistrate Del Giudice.
