What The Auschwitz Report Is About
The Auschwitz Report (original title Správa), directed by Peter Bebjak and released in Slovakia on January 28, 2021, is based on the real April 1944 escape of two Slovak Jewish prisoners, Rudolf Vrba and Alfréd Wetzler, from Auschwitz-Birkenau. After reaching Žilina on the Slovak border, the pair were persuaded by the resistance to put their account in writing; the resulting document became known to history as the Vrba-Wetzler Report and included concrete evidence of the camp's operations, including a Zyklon-B canister label. The film is adapted from Wetzler's own book, What Dante Didn't See. It was selected as Slovakia's submission for Best International Feature at the 93rd Academy Awards but did not make the final shortlist. Who it's for: anyone curious about a historical drama based on a real Auschwitz escape and the actual report that first alerted the world to the camp's operations. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a fictionalized, distanced war film, since this is built directly on documented testimony.
