What The Babushkas of Chernobyl Is About
There are elderly women who went back into the exclusion zone emptied after the 1986 disaster and have lived there for more than thirty years. There are around two hundred of them; they grow vegetables on their own land, keep animals and pick fruit, and they do it on contaminated ground. The documentary follows three of them closely; all three say they fear hunger more than radiation, and they returned in defiance of the Ukrainian authorities. Radiation specialists and the soldiers in the zone are astonished by their durability. Holly Morris and Anne Bogart show the life as ordinary rather than extraordinary; the women live as though nothing about it were strange. Morris’s journalism on the same subject had been published in 2011. It runs seventy-two minutes.
