What The Ballad of Cable Hogue Is About

A man abandoned by his partners in the desert finds water as he is about to die, and plans to build a way station on the spring and get rich. It is Sam Peckinpah's gentlest film, which makes its provenance interesting: there is revenge here and the film does not really want it. Jason Robards keeps the character both irritating and lovable. The end of the west is shown directly through the arrival of the motor car, which turns the film into an elegy. Some of the comedy is crude even for its period.
