What The Beauty of Athens Is About
A will binds a sharp witted man to a hard condition: to come into the inheritance he must marry an elderly woman. He looks for a way out and sets about tricking some poor soul into marrying her in his place. As the plan proceeds the lies chase one another and who is using whom becomes unclear. The film works with the moulds of Greek comedy of the fifties: an inheritance, misunderstandings and neighbourhood types. What the account finds ridiculous is not the woman but the men who will risk anything to get the money. Mimis Fotopoulos and Georgia Vasileiadou appear in Nikos Tsiforos’s eighty minute Greek film, completed in 1954.
