Benoît Allemane
Christian Brückner What The Besieged Fortress Is About
In the savanna of southeastern Burkina Faso stands a termite tower metres high. Philippe Calderon slipped miniature cameras inside it and recorded how the colony works, divides its labour and reproduces. Then tropical rain floods the galleries, the tower weakens, and an army of carnivorous ants takes the opening and attacks. From there the film stops being a nature documentary and turns into something closer to a siege epic, telling a war between two species as the fall of a fortress with no people in it. A French Canadian co-production.
