What The Best Day of My Life Is About
Cristina Comencini's film watches a large family through the eyes of a girl preparing for her first communion. For the child the day is a ceremony; for the adults around her the same day is a gathering where everyone brings an unresolved matter to the table. Between a mother, an aunt, an uncle and a grandmother, the film's attention shifts from any single event to how many separate lives a family is made of. Comencini does it without sliding into melodrama, making the unspoken visible instead, and the child's gaze supplies both the innocence and the cruelty of the telling. Virna Lisi, Margherita Buy and Sandra Ceccarelli are in the cast.
