What The Big Caper Is About
A con artist settles in a small town to run the plan for a payroll robbery. He hides who he is, buys a filling station and presents the appearance of an ordinary life. The trouble is that the act stops being an act. Robert Stevens's film is low budget noir and draws its tension not from the robbery but from the waiting: while the gang sits in the town letting time pass, it is not clear which of them will come apart first. Rory Calhoun and James Gregory play it. Eighty four minutes with not one wasted scene.
