What The Bigamist Is About

Mario De Santis is a sales representative who sells toothpaste. He is married to Valeria and his life runs in order. One day he is accused of being married to two women and taken to the police station. A woman called Isolina Fornaciari is brought before him and says she married him years ago. Mario denies it, but the case grows and he goes in and out of prison more than once. In the meantime his wife and son begin to consider leaving him for good. A friend suspects the whole thing may be nothing but two men sharing a name. In the end it is Quirino, Mario’s former cellmate, who finds out the truth. Marcello Mastroianni and Vittorio De Sica appear in Luciano Emmer’s French and Italian coproduction of 1956.
