What Girl in the Window Is About
Two Italian migrants working the Dutch coal mines come down to Amsterdam for a weekend and meet two women who work behind the windows of the red light district. The four of them take a short break together, and then all of them have to go back to their own lives. Luciano Emmer directed, from a novel by Giovanni Comisso. The Italian censors held the film for months and cut close to eighteen minutes from it; a good many people concluded that what really troubled them was not the erotic material but the depiction of how Italian migrants were working underground. The full version was only reconstructed in 2018.
