What Sunday in August Is About
A Sunday in August, Rome. Everyone still in the city piles onto the morning trains out to the beach at Ostia. The film weaves that one day out of several stories: a large family, a lifeguard who has landed a job on the sand, a girl planning to run off with her boyfriend, a young policeman on duty, a couple short of money. Nothing enormous happens to anyone. In the evening they all take the same train back and the day is over. Luciano Emmer directs; seventy-five minutes. It belongs to the warm, everyday vein of post-war Italian cinema: no great drama, just the street. A young Marcello Mastroianni turns up in a small part.
