What The Blood of Wolves Is About
Kazuya Shiraishi's 2018 Japanese film is set in Hiroshima in 1988 and follows Ogami, a detective said to have ties to the yakuza, and Hioka, the young officer assigned to him. An investigation into a missing person sets off a war between two gangs. The film is an open tribute to Japanese yakuza cinema of the seventies and rebuilds its harshness: the violence is filthy rather than showy, the spaces cramped, and none of the characters is clean. Koji Yakusho's performance keeps which side the man is on uncertain to the end. The violence is extremely graphic and the torture passages long. Who it's for: viewers who like Japanese crime cinema and yakuza films. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding graphic violence and torture, or wanting morally clear characters.
