The Devil's Path

Sudo, a man on death row, writes to Fujii, a magazine reporter. What the letter says is this: there is a man nobody has charged, known in his circle as the teacher, who committed several murders for insurance money. Fujii starts digging. Years have passed and Sudo's account does not quite hold together. The reporter could drop it and does not. His home life comes apart, the magazine pulls back, and he keeps going. In the end the police move. Kazuya Shiraishi directs; two hours and eight minutes, with Pierre Taki as Sudo and Lily Franky as the teacher. It comes from a real case that surfaced in Japan through a magazine investigation. The film also asks why the reporter would not let go, and gives no easy answer.
