What The Boxer and Death Is About
Kraft, the commander of a concentration camp, learns that a prisoner named Kominek used to be a professional boxer. He makes Kominek his own training partner. So the prisoner rises, against his will, to a privileged position in the camp. The privilege brings him food and a kind of safety; in return he has accepted the rules of a game. Then his friend and fellow prisoner dies. Kominek’s anger turns into open revolt. The film tells the human condition under fascism through the story of one man. Štefan Kvietik and Manfred Krug appear in Peter Solan’s Czechoslovak film of 1963, a hundred and seven minutes long.
