What The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down Is About
Paul Sapiano's 2007 film follows twenty-somethings moving from club to club across a single night in Los Angeles. The telling imitates a guidebook: voice-over, charts, graphs, the occasional visit to a laboratory. People drink, take drugs, dance, talk, and try to leave with somebody by the end of the night. The film neither glorifies that nor preaches about it; it mocks the documentary form in order to lay the ritual out. Its low budget and loose structure show, but it holds its tone all the way through. A picture that laughs at the nightlife of its own generation, and a little at itself.
