What The Bridge Is About
To halt the German advance, the partisans send a picked team to blow up a bridge of major strategic value. It is heavily guarded and close to indestructible, and the only man who knows its weak points is the architect who built it, who has no wish to see his own work destroyed. Hajrudin Krvavac's 1969 film is among the best known of the Yugoslav partisan pictures, shot at the Tara Bridge in Montenegro. Bella Ciao, sung in the film by the Italian partisan Zavattoni, became so tied to the picture through its enormous popularity in China in the seventies that many viewers there long assumed it was a Yugoslav song. It is an Italian folk song.
