What Walter Defends Sarajevo Is About
Sarajevo, 1944. The retreating German army needs fuel, and the one obstacle in the way of the shipment is the man leading the resistance in the city: Walter. Nobody has seen him and nobody knows his real name. So the Germans try something else: invent a Walter of their own and collapse the resistance from inside. Hajrudin Krvavac's 1972 film is the most widely seen of all Yugoslav partisan pictures. Bata Živojinović plays Walter. Its strangest afterlife happened in China: it became the most successful foreign film released there in the 1970s, and it still brings Chinese visitors to Sarajevo today.
