What The Captain's Paradise Is About
Henry St James, captain of a Mediterranean ferry, has arranged his life into a perfect system. In Gibraltar a very English and very calm wife waits for him; in Tangier there is a lover who calls him into an entirely different life. As the ship crosses between the two ports the man crosses between two lives, and he is happy in both. The joke of the film is how carefully the arrangement has been built: the clothes, the presents, the habits all change according to the port. It works, of course, only as long as both women stay where they are. Alec Guinness plays the captain without a trace of guilt, with Celia Johnson and Yvonne De Carlo standing for the two lives. The ending is left unspoiled.
