What The Career of a Chambermaid Is About
An ambitious girl from Venice starts as a chambermaid and climbs, by way of singing and film stardom, to a place very close to the top of Fascist Italy. Dino Risi named his 1976 film after the white telephone comedies of the thirties and forties, the glossy, conservative, world blind pictures set in bourgeois drawing rooms, and he mocks both that cinema and the mentality that made it possible. Its hardest moment arrives inside a joke: the character played by Vittorio Gassman entertains his guests with a fake news bulletin announcing that the state will seize all private business, and one of them leaves the room and shoots himself. Agostina Belli received a special David di Donatello for the part.
