Goldie Glitters A Ann Harris What The Cockettes Is About
The story of a company founded in San Francisco in 1969 that put hippie culture and the drag tradition on the same stage. Their late-night shows at the Palace Theatre soon became something that described the city itself, and by the early seventies they had spilled into popular culture. The documentary talks with the members themselves and records both the exhilaration of that period and its coming apart; it does not put anyone on display as a curiosity and leaves people at the centre of their own lives. Bill Weber and David Weissman directed and began work in 1998. It screened at Sundance in 2002, was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize, took the Los Angeles Film Critics award for best documentary and was nominated for an Independent Spirit award.
