The Constitution

A high school teacher in Zagreb is gay and looks after his bedridden father alone. In the same building live a Serbian policeman and his wife, a nurse. There is no connection between them and the teacher keeps his distance. When he is attacked one night in the street, it is his neighbours who help him. After that an exchange takes shape: the woman will look after his father, and he will coach the man for his citizenship exam. Rajko Grlić directed the film, which he wrote with Ante Tomić, and it won the top award at the Montreal Film Festival in 2016. What sits at the centre is that the teacher, who is himself discriminated against, carries his own prejudice against Serbs; nobody comes out clean. Nebojša Glogovac plays the teacher and Ksenija Marinković the nurse. A heavy subject is carried in a tone of irony and comedy.
