What The Courtship of Eddie's Father Is About
Vincente Minnelli's 1963 American film follows Eddie, seven years old and newly bereaved of his mother, trying to find a suitable wife for his father. The boy picks the woman next door; his father is dating others, and the two want different things. The film was sold as a romantic comedy but its strongest passages are about grief: the scene in which Eddie tries to understand his mother's death is unusually direct for a family film of its time. Ron Howard's child performance is natural. Minnelli's use of colour and interior design is strong. The women characters are written to the conventions of the period and read thinly now. Who it's for: viewers who like classic Hollywood family films and Vincente Minnelli. Who it's not for: anyone troubled by the gender conventions of the period, or avoiding the subject of grief.
