What The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos Is About
Lake Natron in northern Tanzania is one of the harshest bodies of water on earth: caustic with soda, blistering, and hostile to almost everything alive. Nearly every lesser flamingo is born there. The documentary follows a million birds through nesting, the chicks' march, and how many of them finish that journey. It stays well away from the usual prettiness of wildlife films; the deaths are not edited out. Matthew Aeberhard and Leander Ward directed it, the first production made under the Disneynature label. It closes by pointing out that the lake is under pressure from pollution and industry. Heavy on image, light on narration.
