Santeri Kuikka What The Cuckoo Is About
September 1944, Lapland. Finland is about to leave the war, and three people do not know it. Veikko is a Finnish sniper chained to a rock who gets himself free. Ivan is a Soviet captain arrested by his own side's secret police. Anni is the Sámi woman who takes both of them onto her farm; to her they are not enemies, just men. The whole device of the film is language: they speak Finnish, Russian and Sámi respectively, understand none of each other, and the audience understands all three. Comedy and tragedy both come out of that.
