What The Culpepper Cattle Co. Is About
Ben Mockridge is barely more than a boy and he wants to be a cowboy. He signs on to Culpepper's cattle drive as a hand: carrying food, seeing to horses, doing what everyone tells him. The road is long, the herd is large and the men are hard. Ben holds the cowboy life he imagined up against the one in front of him: nobody is a hero, everybody is being paid, and death is an ordinary event. In the end he has to make a choice of his own. Dick Richards directs, with Gary Grimes as Ben and Billy Green Bush as the trail boss. It sits squarely in the western of the seventies: dirt, dust, and a West with the romance taken out of it entirely.
